Alright today I was trying to get the engine running better on the bus and noticed the heat riser on the right was like 150 deg hotter than the left. I did measure it with a infrared thermometer. Do you think I have a dead cylinder on the left or stuck valve? I am kinda gettin burnt out workin on this thing so I am gonna take it easy for a few days and then hit it hard and fix it,looking for ideas guys.

Actually that means your heat risers are working properly. I don't remember why...but it's perfectly normal.

I would sujest shooting the infrared beam from under the van. Directly into the cylinder sleaves or the exhaust out/port to see if the thing is not firing. Good luck

Pulled the plugs off of the left side and no change so it is running on 2 cylinders now just have to track it down, both have spark my fingers told me that lol
Back to the drawing board
new plugs changed wires checked timing checked 180 out etc still nothing exhaust at the head reads around 330 on one side both ports and the other side 95 both ports, checked compression and it was really low on 4 (60psi) 3(100)
And just so you guys know a vw will run on only 1&2 cylinders I never would have thought

Brian, what size motor is in your bus? The 1300 that was in my single cab ran great and did not smoke, when we broke it down to replace all the seals the heads were beat up and I think two of the jugs were cracked or something. BTW - I bought a set of NOS rings for that motor, we put them in but never fired the motor, if you need parts we could work out a swap or something.
